Lean libations: no extra calories in these flavor-filled concoctions

Ever since Weight Watchers made a splash on the dieting scene in the 1960s, we’ve been told to treat drinking like vampires treat sunlight.

In other words, avoid it at all costs.

It was wise counsel in 1963, but over the past couple of years smart bartenders across the country have devised new drinks that pack an alcoholic punch with 50 percent to 70 percent fewer calories.

That’s important, especially in a place where bathing suit weather is pretty much all year long.

“We have a lot of guests who like to lay out by the pool,” said Buddy Dennington, a bartender at Citron at the Viceroy. “People who run around in bathing suits want something that’s refreshing without the calories to drink.”
